The sounds of July 4th are all around us: the grill sizzling like it’s trying out for a cooking show—mainly with the occasional flare-up that sends Dad frantically waving a spatula like a traffic cop. Sparklers pop, and cheers erupt from the cornhole tournament champions (or those who are just glad not to lose). Jet skis rev lazily on the water, while the satisfying psst of soda cans opening signals the start of another round of celebration. Kids zoom past, yelling, “Tag, you’re it!” or debating who gets the last chicken wing like it’s a matter of national security. Somewhere nearby, Uncle Joe’s proudly sharing his “secret” marinade recipe, which everyone knows is just ketchup and a wink. Plates clang, Grandma’s voice cuts through the chaos, reminding everyone not to burn the food (again), and the dog pants enthusiastically—probably hoping for a dropped snack—while the neighbor’s lawn mower drones on in the background. And, of course, there’s always that collective sigh when someone accidentally sets off the smoke alarm. Meanwhile, along the parade route, the steady cadence of marching and string bands fills the streets, leading up to the oohs and ahhs as fireworks burst into a spectacular night sky.
